| Welcome to my Master of
Library Science (MLS) Portfolio. This portfolio contains work I
completed while in Emporia State University’s School of Library and
Information Management (SLIM) distance program in Portland, Oregon. The
work within this portfolio represents the eight program outcomes
defined in more detail under the outcomes
section and at the program’s
website. [About me] In 1995, I began my career in libraries starting with my local public library. I spent six years working for the same library system. Much of what I learned on the job, I have taken with me to other positions. I left library services to pursue a career in mental health and use my Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology. After working for two years in various psychiatric facilities, I discovered it was not my calling and decided to return to library services. I realized how much I missed working in a library and decided to start a master's program in library science. In 2003, I started working for a medical research library as a library technical specialist. It was the first time I had ever thought about special libraries and the importance of them within certain organizations. Since starting the program, I have joined several library associations to gain more of an understanding of the library field in general. Ultimately, I would like to work for a health sciences library. My personal preference would be to work for a research facility similar to the one I am in now. [About my Portfolio] While I plan to pursue a career in the health sciences, my portfolio does not entirely reflect that career goal. Rather, my portfolio demonstrates the many areas of interest I have and ways I have tested my knowledge and understanding of the program. I have divided my portfolio into several sections. Under Assignments, I have alphabetically arranged a selected list of artifacts with brief descriptions and links. In the section marked Subject Index, I have listed several different topics with links to the selected artifacts in this portfolio. The Outcomes sections links the eight program outcomes with the selected artifacts in this portfolio. ~Cat |
